Everyone knows Matt...but did you know his first name is actually David? Yep. David Matthew Howard. D. Matt has been involved in the cycling industry as long has he's been able to walk. His father, Ralph Howard, founded The Bike Shoppe in the Summer of 1976. Matt and his twin brother John "helped out" as the Shoppe's first three-year-old employees. Back then, the little shop was in a small strip-mall behind the New Gate Mall in Riverdale.

Matt knows just about everything there is to know about bikes. However, two things really set him apart: first, he genuinely cares about people. Come in and talk to him. He'll spend the time to get to know you. You'll end up with a sweet ride, and you'll make a great friend in the process. Second: his amazing attention to detail. If your bike comes into his shop, you know it'll be done right. Perhaps you've noticed...maybe this is why we continue to grow and expand year after year. With the growth, the Shoppe had to expand. In 1995 we moved to our current location just east of Washington Terrace on Washington Boulevard across the street from the old Hilltop Bowling Lanes...

This is where I (Nate) come into the story. As long as I can remember, I've wanted to work at a bike shop. I grew up in North Ogden and attended Weber High School. At that time, many of the Shoppe's employees were fellow North Ogdenites. A good friend of mine, Tyson Whitehead, gave me the chance I was hoping for and introduced me to Matt. I started working for the Shoppe in 1998, and I've loved nearly every day of my employment here. When asked, I tell people my plan is to work here until I die. I love the ever-changing, fast-paced nature of the cycling industry. There are always new things to learn and new amazing product that I can't seem to live without.  Most importantly, I love cycling. Riding bikes is so different today than it was only 15 years ago; and yet, in many ways, it's still the same. The bikes change. I used to ride old rigid, steel, canti-brake bikes up on the benches of Ben Lomond, on the Skyline Trail, and around Snow Basin... and I LOVED it. Bikes are ever-evolving. You should see what I'm riding now! Needless to say, I'm much faster and definitely more comfortable than I used to be. But I'm still LOVING every second of it. The mountains (at least by my reckoning) remain the same. The amazing experience remains the same time after time. I'm still in love with the simple pleasures of being outdoors with my bike. Give it a try...take your bike up into the mountains on a crisp Spring morning. Smell the air, feel the wheels on the trail beneath you, take in the scenery, listen to the life around you, and YOU'LL BE HOOKED!
